The theory test is an important part of the learning to drive process. It allows candidates to demonstrate that they have a clear understanding of the rules of the road and that they recognise their responsibility as a road user.

DSA’s official publishing partner, The Stationery Office (TSO), has been working with educational specialists and subject matter experts to enhance the best-selling theory test books and develop them into valuable learning tools for car and motorcycle test candidates. Whilst the books still include hundreds of official theory test revision questions which cover the same topics as the actual test, the real value comes from the new background information which has been added to the start of each section.

Learning your way
Recognising that everyone learns in different ways, the bite-size background information caters for different learning styles. Each section includes photos and diagrams to illustrate key points, definitions to describe tricky words and tips to highlight important information. The learning experience is multi-dimensional with regular links throughout the book to online videos and interactive activities where candidates can learn more. There are also tips on how to study, aimed at providing learners with all the support they need to prepare for their test.

Self-assessment is encouraged throughout with pages for making notes and suggested things to think about at the end of each topic. In addition to the revision questions, complete with explanations and references to the information the question is taken from, there are case studies for each topic and new cross-topic case studies which are very similar to the ones from the actual test. Candidates can use these questions and case studies to test how much they have learnt from studying the background information.

More than a test
A great deal of thought has gone into linking the theory back to practical on-road experience with a summary of what learners need to do, know and understand to meet the National Driving or Riding Standard for each topic and ideas to discuss with your driving instructor and practise when driving. This reinforces the theory and highlights the practical applications of what has been learnt, helping develop safer, more competent road users.
