Older Driver Skills Scheme

Hampshire County Council has operated a driving appraisal scheme for drivers of 60 years of age and over since 2003. The aim is to enhance safety levels and enable older people to carry on driving safely for as long as possible.

In 2003, when Hampshire County Council realised that the casualty figures in the New Forest were rising, they embarked on a campaign to promote Hampshire County Council’s Older Driver Skills Scheme to find ways of helping drivers 60 and over to improve their skills and safety on the road.

Casualty figures in the New Forest at this time had risen and were expected to increase the following year; but the figures dropped by almost a half – a notable reduction, and only a year after the scheme was implemented in the area.

At present, around 50 older driver assessments are being carried out each month across Hampshire.

The Older Driver Skills Scheme is ideal for people who’ve been driving for years and want to update their skills or gain confidence; those recovering from illness or injury; those advised on health grounds; people returning to driving or finding it difficult to adapt to a new car.

It is an informal, confidential 90 minute appraisal that aims to develop drivers skills which will enable that person to continue driving with improved awareness, confidence and safety and ultimately become better, safer drivers.

General ability is assessed but particular concerns can be investigated. Each person is given a comprehensive de-brief and any concerns or remedial action discussed, a written report follows. A current driving licence is required and eyesight is checked. The appraisal costs £30 and is delivered from the persons home, using their own car.

Feedback indicates a high degree of satisfaction with the scheme.

The scheme receives strong support from local health professionals, parish councils, voluntary and community care groups, retirement and leisure clubs, information centres and many more who continue to disseminate information about the scheme. The scheme was also recognised nationally, at the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards, for it’s contribution to reduction in casualties.
