The annual RAC Report on Motoring provides a snapshot of drivers' attitudes and behaviours with regard to motoring, including road safety related issues. The 2011 report touches on drink driving, mobile phone usage and roads policing.
• The cost of motoring remains the primary concern for drivers. However, drink-driving, the condition of roads, driving without tax or insurance and mobile phone usage behind the wheel complete the top five.
• Drivers are facing an increasingly tough fight to meet the rising cost of motoring but remain adamant there are few alternatives. This is particularly the case for rural drivers, though urban drivers are also feeling the pain.
• The illegal use of mobile phones behind the wheel continues to be a problem, particularly among younger drivers.
The report, which is based on research from a sample of 1,002 British drivers, also found that motorists want to see better enforcement of existing laws and a more visible police presence on the roads.
In the report it is also revealed that 27% of British motorists admit to using a mobile phone without a hands free kit while driving, and 24% of young drivers use social media sites while driving.
