This research report from the IAM, of more than 1,000 people, gauges the public’s opinion of safety cameras.
Acceptability levels for safety cameras remain high at 79%, with 18% opposed to them and 2% undecided. Acceptability is greatest among women respondents [85%] as opposed to men [74%].
Most support was expressed by the 25-34 and 45-54 age groups [81%] and least support [74%] / most opposition [23%] by the youngest drivers [17-24]. ABs were most supportive [82%], with C1s least supportive [77%] / most opposed
[20%].
Low mileage drivers were most supportive [85%] and high mileage drivers least supportive [70%] / most opposed [26%].
Londoners showed most support for safety cameras with an 85% approval rating, whereas those in the North East gave the lowest approval rating [67%]. However opposition was greatest among respondents in Wales [28%].
Respondents were asked if they believed that safety cameras were only used at sites with a bad record of crashes and injuries. Only 29% agreed with the proposition, whereas 53% disagreed and 17% expressed no opinion.
