Enhanced Pass Plus was launched by North Yorkshire County Council through the 95 Alive York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership to encourage newly qualified drivers to put safety first and help them identify risks.
The scheme was introduced in March 2010 to give new drivers extra training to help keep them safe on the roads for life. There has been huge interest with over 120 driving instructors signing up to deliver the scheme.
It is subsidised by North Yorkshire County Council through the 95 Alive York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership. Driving instructors take part in a one day training course, new drivers do a minimum of six extra sessions and attend a two hour driver
discussion group.
Comments from new drivers who attended the course include:
• “It’s great, every one should do it”
• “Made me think a lot more about my driving”
• “This should be compulsory”
• “Helps a lot more than normal driving lessons”
Comments from driving instructors include:
• “It was a very good well thought out scheme”
• “It is fantastic to see the county council supporting road safety in such a positive manner”
• “It gave me a better understanding of coaching and its application”
• “It makes the pupil relate their driving to real life.”
An evaluation is currently being undertaken.
