Since completion of the Mixed Priority Route schemes the changing economic environment and its effect on local government expenditure has raised new issues regarding the project which are discussed in this report.

The Department for Transport (DfT) initiated the Mixed Priority Routes Demonstration Project in response to the road safety problems surrounding mixed use high streets, at times amongst the least safe of urban roads. The aim was to implement a number of trial schemes, monitor the effects and provide a good practice guide to assist local authorities implement such schemes in the future.
A best practice guidance document was published as Local Transport Note (LTN) 03/08 along with scheme report documents providing a more detailed view on individual aspects of the trial schemes.
