The sub-title to this book is ‘Taxonomies and Safety Science’. It deconstructs the conventional concept of ‘human error’ and provides a new way of looking at accidents and how they might be presented.
Central to the book is its demonstration that the creation of reliable taxonomies of error events is crucial.
While not mentioning the STATS19 data system, it is clearly relevant to it. The reader who is familiar with road accident data collection will quickly realise that some of its problems (compounded by the recent addition of a whole new ‘contributory factors’ record) stem from a lack of mutual exclusivity and exhaustiveness and a complete failure to recognise the need for reliability or consensus trial.
