The ‘Interdisciplinary Learning in Road Safety’ Pack

West Dunbartonshire's road safety team has developed a road safety pack that links road safety projects taught in schools to the new national framework, Curriculum for Excellence.

The ‘Interdisciplinary Learning in Road Safety’ Pack highlights how early years, primary and secondary pupils learn road safety messages across different curriculum areas such as health and wellbeing, expressive arts, literacy, numeracy, social studies and sciences.

The pack has been developed by the council’s road safety team in conjunction with Educational Services and is the first of its kind in Scotland.

It sets out the experiences and outcomes from within and across the different curriculum areas of the new national framework for the extensive range of road safety education and training projects delivered by the council’s educational establishments.

Through planning and delivering effective learning and teaching in line with Curriculum for Excellence, pupils will be given opportunities to develop their road user knowledge and skills through a range of experiences. Younger children will learn basic skills such as the importance of holding hands with an adult when crossing the road, and the Green Cross Code. Older pupils will learn cycle skills, how to travel independently and also be taught about safe driving.

Learning about road safety across different areas of the curriculum will provide relevant, challenging and enjoyable learning experiences for children and young people. It will make road safety education more meaningful and young people will see the relevance of what they are learning to their everyday lives.

If other local authorities express an interest in using the pack in their schools we will be happy to share our experiences with them.
