This report comprises an analysis of collisions in Sheffield involving a bus.
• The number of slight bus collisions is falling in-line with other types of collisions; however the number of KSI collisions is not.
• Collisions involving a bus make up 12% of all collisions in Sheffield and 9% of KSI collisions.
• There is a peak in the number of collisions in October and November and a fall in August.
• 66% of bus collisions are single vehicle collisions in which no other vehicle was involved.
• 86% of collisions take place between 8am and 6pm on a weekday, peaking between 3pm and 4pm. There is more than average on a Friday.
• Bus passengers make up 69% of all casualties resulting from a collision involving a bus
• The number of bus passenger casualty’s increase with age, peaking between the ages of 70-79.
• Almost a half of bus passenger casualties under the age of 80 receive their injury whilst seated within the bus; however those aged 80 and above are most likely to receive their injury whilst boarding.
• Beyond the age of 20 female bus passengers have a much greater casualty rate than males.
• 40% of KSI collisions involving a bus passenger being injured were caused by heavy braking.
• Almost a third of collisions took place within the inner ring road.
