The DfT's 'Guidelines for Evaluating Road Safety Education Interventions' aim to assist road safety officers and other practitioners to conduct their own evaluations and to be better informed when commissioning an evaluation.

Published in 2004, the guidelines provide practical advice based upon the experiences of evaluators. They include:

• Background information about evaluation including the terminology used and description of different types of evaluation.
• Advice on how to find information about published evaluations, which can help you evaluate your own programme.
• Guidance on choosing an evaluator to conduct the evaluation.
• A practical step-by-step guide to doing an evaluation, including: defining an evaluation objective; identifying the target group; developing evaluation measures; selecting evaluation methods; designing and testing materials; collecting the data/information; analysing and interpreting the results; and writing an evaluation report.
• Examples of successful evaluation techniques that have been used in road safety.
• General guidance on how to work with the programme developers and managers.
• Advice on the cost-effectiveness of different evaluations.
• A comprehensive list of other publications about evaluation.
