If used on a UK public highway motorcycle helmets and visors, where applicable, must comply with European Regulation 22.05 (includes a Certification system) or products with Kitemark Certification to BS 6658 (helmets) and BS 4110 (visors).
BSI (British Standards Institution) works on behalf of the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) to test to Regulation 22.05. Products to Regulation 22.05 and the British Standards are subjected to batch testing, which means that samples from each batch manufactured are tested before they are put on the market.
Four wheeled motor sport should have at least a CE mark, but there are some manufacturers who have chosen to go one step further and ensure that their product is tested and certified to the UK’s premier symbol of quality and safety – the Kitemark.
If motorcycle helmets are not for use on the public highway then the only laws covering them are those for personal user protection.
