Hampshire's Older Driver Appraisal Scheme has been running for more than 10 years and 90% of those who attend say they would recommend the scheme to a friend.
The Older Appraisal Scheme is a confidential and enjoyable appraisal of driving skills for older motorists. It takes 90 minutes and is conducted in the driver’s own car with specially trained Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs), who have a good understanding of the needs of older drivers.
It is not a test but an informal, confidential appraisal which offers help and advice to enable the participant to continue driving for longer – with improved safety.
General ability is assessed but the appraisal can be adapted to investigate a particular concern. The appraisal also includes an eyesight check.
Following the practical drive, each driver is given a comprehensive debrief during which any concerns or remedial actions are discussed. A detailed report is also prepared and sent to the person’s home.
The scheme is intended for:
• People who have been driving for a number of years and want to update their skills or gain confidence.
• Drivers recovering from illness or injury and those advised to attend on health grounds.
• People returning to driving or those who are finding it difficult to adapt to a new vehicle.
The scheme has been running for more than 10 years and in 2007 it won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
Evaluation questionnaires are sent to participants three months after their appraisal. Responses show that more than 90% would recommend the scheme to a friend, the majority say they learnt something new that can be put into practice and more than 95% enjoyed the overall experience.
The scheme is subsidised and the current price (October 2010) is £30.
