This report examines the police reported motorcycle crashes in Devon.
As far as is possible, this exploratory data analysis is carried out with respect
to published research on motorcycle crashes.
A review of related literature identified the following key points:
• Injury/mortality burden is now dominated by more chronologically mature riders.
• Socio-economic differentials are particularly pronounced amongst young riders.
• Females may be at relatively more risk of more serious injury.
• There are limits to the role of medicine in mitigating injury consequences.
• Motorcycles can cause significant injury burdens even when not being used for transport (e.g. exhaust pipe burns among children, off-road riding).
• Current research concentrates on behavioural issues, but concerns over highways and violations of right of way abound.
• Arguments have been made that powered two wheeler users need to be more cautious about the effects of alcohol.
• Machine type and size are related to relative injury severity.
