An analysis of collisions in Sheffield involving a taxi.

An investigation has been carried out into the road safety problems of taxis.

In the 5 year period 2005-2009, there were 427 collisions in Sheffield involving a taxi. A number of significant findings were made, including:

• The largest numbers of collisions take place in December, although there is no general increase in the winter months.

• The largest percentage of collisions occurs on a Friday and Saturday in the early hours of the morning.

• The number of collisions peaks between 11.00pm-1.00am and 3.00am-4.00am.

• 99% of taxi drivers involved in collisions are male and the majority are aged between 30 and 39.

• 20-24 year olds account for 21% of all taxi passengers injured.

• 27% of the pedestrians who were hit by a taxi were intoxicated at the time of their accident.

• In comparison to other authorities across South Yorkshire and the North and Midlands, Sheffield has the highest taxi collision rate per 1,000 licensed taxi drivers.
