The figures show that between July and September 11,030 new ULEVs were registered, an increase of 47% on the same period in 2015, and a 118% increase compared with the same period in 2014.
The DfT says most of the increase in ULEV registrations has been accounted for by vehicles eligible for plug-in car and van grants. New registrations in July to September 2016 included 9,643 cars and 274 vans that were eligible for the grant, a 50% rise on the same period in 2015.
The DfT stats also show that for the year ending September 2016, ULEVs represented 1.2% of all new registrations, compared with 1.0% in the year ending September 2015 and 0.4% the year prior to that.
In terms of all vehicles, July to September 2016 saw 893,000 new registrations – the highest number ever recorded in the third quarter in Great Britain, and 0.2% higher than the previous peak in 2002.
This means that at the end of September 2016 there were 37.4m vehicles licensed for use on the roads in Great Britain, of which 30.9m were cars.
