The 'Drive 55' course is a refresher course specially devised for people over the age of 55, but also open to drivers of all ages. The course is designed to refresh drivers' skills and knowledge in a non-threatening environment.
The first part is a half-day theory session to help drivers to update their knowledge. No driving is involved on the day. Up to 20 people can attend at a time and courses are delivered by experienced DSA registered instructors.
Discussion topics include driving techniques, changes in legislation, Highway Code, keeping fit to drive and how the ageing process can affect a driver’s ability and skill.
The second part is a 90-minute practical drive undertaken in the driver’s own car and accompanied by an experienced instructor. The route is local and the aim is to update and improve driving skill/technique/awareness without the threat of a test or assessment.
This initial evaluation gauges general opinion of delivery and content. Further evaluation is planned focusing on driver attitude and behaviour change as a result of participating in the intervention.
