The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust is committed to saving young people's lives by promoting safe cycling and, in particular, the use of cycle helmets.

The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust was set up in 1998 with the aim of reducing the number of children who are killed and injured every year in the UK as a result of head injuries sustained in cycling accidents.

By advancing the use of helmets, cycle training, cycle lights and reflective clothing, the charity aims to ensure young cyclists are well equipped to take part in this healthy and environmentally friendly form of transport.

Using what research is available, the charity is in no doubt that cycle helmets save lives and its aim is to support young cyclists to wear one.

The Trust works closely with road safety officers, other NGOs, teachers, parents, police, government departments and health professionals.

However, working directly with children and young people is at the forefront of its vision and helping to ensure as far as possible their safety and well-being remains our primary objective.

The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust took the top award at the 2009 European Road Safety Awards by beating 75 other entries from 17 countries across Europe to win first prize for its ‘Headsmart’ project.
