Stay active, stay safe: drivers’ perceptions of Intelligent Speed Adaptation Systems

An intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) technology was designed for older drivers following a field study which discovered that older drivers had difficulty maintaining a relatively smooth speed under free-flow traffic conditions and exceeded the speed limit when driving on roads with a low speed limit.

This paper examines the relationship between the user perceived workload when driving with the ISA technology, and user attitudes towards the system.

The results indicate that ISA systems make driving more relaxed and safer. However, the implementation of the system has a significant impact on user perceived workload and user acceptance.

There are indications that a driver assistance system with frequent interventions will not be appealing and/or helpful to drivers aged over 75, or female older drivers.
