This guide is designed to help older drivers think about their driving and make the right decisions to stay safe and independent.

It provides advice on how to continue driving safely and comfortably in order to help older drivers stay on the road for as long as possible.

It was researched and written by Rica, with funding from the Department for Transport, the RAC Foundation and the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund.

The guidance is based on research carried out in May 2013. Rica held focus groups with older drivers and their relatives, and consulted with experts on road safety.

The RAC Foundation’s analysis shows there are now 4,018,900 men and women aged 70 or over with a valid full British licence. Of these, 191 are aged 100 or over. The oldest licence holder is a woman aged 107 and the oldest licence-holding man is 106.

The guide covers a range of topics including what the law says about people’s ability to drive, assessing capabilities, vehicle modifications, driving habits, and maintaining a good quality of life after stopping driving.
