Through an engaging DVD and colourful workbook, Safer Steps provides a useful tool for working with Key Stage 2 children on basic road crossing skills.
Combining workbook and DVD elements that parents can work through together with their children, Safer Steps allows children to progress systematically through a range of road crossing scenarios. Starting with fundamentals, the materials progress to include more complex road junctions and signal controlled crossings.
The characters in the DVD are illustrated in the book so children enjoy working through the two elements together.
The workbook encourages active participation too, with areas to record when the child has completed certain activities under adult supervision.
At the end of the process there is a certificate that can be completed and awarded to the child for working through all the material.
Throughout the material, children are encouraged to reflect back to their adult helpers the things that they have learnt, in order to evidence that they have assimilated the information.
This approach could make Safer Steps a useful follow-up to a school visit or classroom assembly.
