Analysis of Child Casualties in North East England, 2007 – 2011

In March 2012, the North East Regional Road Safety Resource was requested by Road Safety GB North East to produce a series of reports examining child casualty numbers at a local authority (LA) level for each of the 12 LAs in the North East. This was to enable each LA to more effectively target increasingly limited resources at the main causes of child casualties in their areas. This report pulls together all the information on child casualties in the North East in order to allow for more co-ordinated regional work on the main road safety problems that result in child casualties in the area.

The report looks at various aspects of child road user casualty statistics, such as the months, days and hours that children are most at risk of becoming injured in a collision; the vehicle types that they are most likely to be injured by; the manner in which pedestrian casualties occur; the causation factors behind the casualties; and provides a demographic and social profile of child casualties to assist with targeting campaign and general road safety work.
