Rutland County Council

Rutland County Council provides road safety information for road users. Our aim is to encourage safer behaviour to reduce the number of people killed and injured on our roads every year.

Rutland County Council is involved in various initiatives aimed at increasing road safety in the area, including:

Safer Routes to School
The Safer Routes to School initiative aims to promote safer, more environmentally sustainable and healthier ways of getting to and from school with particular emphasis on walking and cycling. To achieve this, we need to improve conditions (both in safety and the environment) on the main walking and cycling routes to school. Schemes can include physical measure such as safer crossing points and may involve work within the school grounds.

School Travel Plans
A school travel plan is a document which sets out a number of practical ways to reduce the number of car trips made to a school, to encourage more walking and cycling and to improve safety on the school journey.

Rutland Sustainable Modes of Travel to School Strategy
The Rutland Sustainable Modes of Travel to School Strategy results from the Education and Inspection Act 2006, that requires all local authorities to encourage parents and pupils to travel to school sustainably e.g. by walking, cycling, using public/school transport and car sharing, where possible. The strategy brings together the ways in which we are going to do this and can be viewed by following the links below to the strategy itself, or to the summary document.

Traffic Schemes
Traffic Management schemes are introduced to solve an identified problem in one or more roads. The need for a scheme can be identified in a variety of ways. It may , for example, be a bad accident record or the concerns of residents that prompts an investigation. Sometimes the Council adopts an ‘area wide’ approach to traffic problems, for example, where there is a demand from several residential roads for ‘Speed Control Humps’. To deal with this, priority is given to the worst problems first.
