Transport for London (TfL) was created in 2000 as part of the Greater London Authority. Put simply, we manage London’s transport network, and put the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy into action.
Keeping seven million Londoners moving is a huge job – and it takes more than 28,000 of us to do it. We manage several modes of transport, coordinate developments and protect a considerable amount of infrastructure.
On top of delivering everyday services, we’re always looking to improve and build for the future too. That way, we can make travelling in London more efficient, reliable and accessible to all.
London Underground, London Buses and the Public Carriage Office are all part of TfL. Not just the TfL we are today, but as part of transport services that have been growing for over 100 years. Our heritage is something we’re proud of – but it’s also one of our biggest challenges. We often have to combine old infrastructure with new technology to make sure that our transport network is fit for the 21st century.
Our transportation groups are in three main areas. Surface, Underground and Rail. Behind the scenes, we’ve also a huge corporate function that enables us to provide the services we do. Planners, Project Managers, Technicians and hundreds more all play a part in creating a system that London can be proud of.
