South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership was formed to reduce the number of casualties on local roads by reducing the number of motorists breaking the speed limit.
The Partnership is made up of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield councils, Highways Agency, Her Majesty’s Courts Service and South Yorkshire Police.
There are now 150 fixed and mobile camera locations in the county. All fixed speed cameras are painted bright yellow to make them highly visible to drivers.
The mobile units can be used on roads also covered by fixed cameras as well as other routes that qualify because of their high rates of collisions or speeding. In addition, they can be used on roads not included in the scheme, but subject to community concern about speeding.
The results of a report into the first four years of the National Safety Camera Programme (published December 2005) shows safety cameras are having the desired effect. Vehicle speeds are down, casualties and deaths are down, there’s a positive cost-benefit to society and the public support the use of safety cameras for targeted enforcement.
