London Borough of Bexley

Road safety work supports the Council’s ambition of ‘improving the quality of life in Bexley’.

It also supports themes set out in its long-term vision for Bexley in the Community Strategy: Our Vision for Bexley 2003-2013.

This vision was developed by the Partnership for Bexley, the Local Strategic Partnership.

Our Vision details aspirations for the Borough and its community. Within ten years, it aims to achieve:

A strong, sustainable and cohesive community;
• Individual well-being and development;
• A safe secure and attractive environment; and
• Economic prosperity and opportunity.

The Community Strategy Action Plan sets out the following aims relevant to road safety:

Work towards an improved transport system including a road network which meets the needs of users to move efficiently and safely around the borough.

Seek to achieve a more comprehensive and integrated public transport system which better meets local people’s needs.

Support residents and businesses in moving to sustainable travel and transport.

In previous years, the Council’s safety engineering schemes have achieved more than the expected casualty reductions.

It is harder to measure the effectiveness of education and publicity work, but it is accepted as essential to continue such measures to complement engineering and enforcement work.

By its actions, the Council will also contribute towards the Mayor of London’s extra targets covering vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists and powered two-wheeler users.
