The London Borough of Newham is an inner borough (although officially classified as outer London), situated in East London. The borough is bounded to the south by the river Thames and by the London Borough of Greenwich, to the west by the river Lea and the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Hackney, to the north by the London Boroughs of Waltham Forest and Redbridge, and to the east by the river Roding and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Newham has a population of approximately 247,700 and is ranked 4th in London on the Index of Deprivation.
Newham has a diverse borough with a large number of ethnic communities which make up over 60% of the boroughs population. Catchment areas for the boroughs schools are generally small with 68.89 persons per hectare compared to 47.3 London wide. A significant number of our residents are of school age (50,326) as the borough has the highest proportion of under 16’s as a percentage of total population (25%) of anywhere in the country.
Levels of car ownership in the borough are quite low compared to the rest of London with 48.9% of the boroughs population not owning a car level of car ownership are low compared to the London and National averages.
The Safety Education Service consists of One Manager, 2 Safety Education Officers, 1 SCP Co-ordinator 1 Cycle training Co-ordinator and 2 School Travel Advisors. Together we:
• Educate the public on the dangers of road use
• Educate the public on how to travel safely, whether driving, walking or riding a bike
• Assess crashes to find out what common factors could have caused them
• Use crash evidence to implement measures to reduce the number of crashes in future
• Alter the layout of roads to increase safety
• Manage school crossing
• Advise children and parents on safer routes to school
