I am an Observer for Bristol Advanced Motorists (part of IAM RoadSmart) and occasionally we are contacted by older drivers for a driving assessment. We usually pass these enquiries to IAM RoadSmart HQ who will allocate an IAM RoadSmart examiner to the driver and conduct a driving assessment of about 1 hour and provide feedback.
We also do full IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driving courses for drivers of any age – we recently had someone who was 82 and passed the Advanced Test (after several drives with an Observer) with an excellent result.

But Motorways are the safest type of road to drive in the UK (urban, country and dual carriageways) by fatalities/mile. I do see some occasional horrendous driving but overall…
Also undertaking isn’t actually illegal – you not allowed to move left but simply continue in the same lane – the police would be much more interested in the car that stays in the outside lane.

Well it depends! If the ‘other end’ is visible and there is nothing waiting or coming, I would wait around 60-90 secs before ‘getting twitchy’. If the lights are blank, then sooner. If I can’t see the other end then I’d wait probably 3 minutes or longer.

Hello Jane, Perhaps you can be more specific in your question?

Just to say Rural Roads have a relatively poor record in regards to fatal/serious crashes (high speed and potentially dangerous) when compared to:
Motorways (which are the safest by far)
Dual Carriageways (high speed but not many crashes)
Town roads (lots of crashes but mostly low speed).

Tell us more about your concern/query.

Peter – I sympathise with your campaign and efforts, I too have serious doubts about e-scooters and their rider’s safety.

One small point – it is legal to park on pavements if you don’t ‘obstruct’ i.e. a double pushchair or wheelchair can get past. I believe London may have it’s own rules.

Sorry, I’m not sure I understand your question…why would you do a U-turn on a dual carriageway with a central reservation? Perhaps you mean through a break in the central reservation…if you do, then I am not aware of any approved safety guidelines.

Tell us more about why you are asking.
