Our local authority had a fatality (vehicle swept away and driver drowned) at a ford more than a decade ago and this had been preceded by several similar incidents – following the fatality electronic water level measuring equipment was installed to relay a message to the local authority of rapidly rising waters. Gates were also installed on either side and LA staff can now respond quickly to close these, preventing drivers from attempting to cross. A local resident objected to the Traffic Regulation Order proposal and a hearing was held to resolve this ( it found in favour of granting the LA the power to close the road). The system has worked effectively since it was commissioned.

Hi Joanne, in East Renfrewshire we resorted to installing zebra crossings at sites where we were experiencing the issues you describe. This was several years back and it has had the intended effect. To provide some context, I can advise that we are a small suburban unitary authority and have totals of 22 zebra crossings, 50 puffin crossings & 9 toucans. (NB Only 7 of the zebras have scp’s operating on them).
