We’re having issues with one of our School Crossing Patrol locations. Traffic is sometimes brought to a crawl by parked cars etc. Unfortunately the majority of drivers are not leaving the Crossing clear for the SCP and this is causing problems. There is not enough room on the pavement to hold large groups so therefore the SCP is struggling. This is leading to parents getting impatient and crossing with their children between the stationary cars.

Do any of you use markings on the road to indicate the crossing and to request it to be kept clear please? If so, what do you use. I can’t find any images on-line. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Joanne.

Joanne – I have used keep clear road markings before, I can send you a pic if required.

    Good Morning
We do have two crossings with this problem – not so much narrow pavements but definitely cars crawling along. We have ‘Keep Clear’ markings on the carriageway which does help. If you would like to email me on janet.fairhead@hertfordshire.gov.uk I can speak to you and arrange to have photo’s.

Hi Joanne, in East Renfrewshire we resorted to installing zebra crossings at sites where we were experiencing the issues you describe. This was several years back and it has had the intended effect. To provide some context, I can advise that we are a small suburban unitary authority and have totals of 22 zebra crossings, 50 puffin crossings & 9 toucans. (NB Only 7 of the zebras have scp’s operating on them).

    Hi Joanne,

This is a consideration for a few of our crossing patrol locations both in respect of the vehicle issue, but also to be clear to pedestrians where the crossing point actually is as opposed to entering the road any distance from the patrol.
We have some sites using a non-statutory yellow ‘box’ but also starting to use a different coloured and textured road surface to indicate the crossing point. In the locations originally using the yellow box, it has assisted in keeping the crossing clearer of vehicles.

    Many thanks

    David

A possible solution might be to ask the roads authority to drop the kerbs at the crossing point and apply road markings to TSRGD Diagram 1026.1.

See Schedule 11, Part 4, Item 17 of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, which says (alongside an image of the line as it might be used at a private access):

    17
    Diagram 1026.1

Part of the carriageway outside a vehicular entrance to adjacent premises or a private drive, or where the kerb is dropped to provide a convenient crossing place for pedestrians, which should be kept clear of waiting vehicles.

This link will get you there:
