In our authority area there have been several collisions recently which may be indicative of a worrying, emerging pattern. Drivers parked (nose-in) in end-on spaces have accelerated forwards, across the footway, and crashed into buildings. Although full details aren’t available for each incident, it would seem that these have been relatively new electric vehicles which the drivers were not yet familiar with (especially the automatic gearing?). Have any other authorities noticed an increase in similar collisions and, if so, is there a requirement to do more to train drivers how to control these vehicles?

This is most likely an old establish psychological phenomena regarding unintended actions. First noted in Hawaii in the 1960’s. We have done a couple of forensic cases.
Drop us a line at the website contact page – Userperspective.co.uk and we can chat and share what more data you need to find a reason to go to Hawaii!Martin

Havingbeen involved in transition to a quite large EV fleet, every driver had a handover session, unless they were swopping from having an auto. Everyone had some form of introduction and so far no incidents. Remebering a handover or introduction to new / different equipoment is a requirement of PUWER.
By all means ping me for some ideas and options.September 28, 2022 at 3:58 pm #17795David NewmanParticipantHi Dermot,
If you are not aware already this pattern has an name and acronym SASH, https://expertwitness.trl.co.uk/sudden-acceleration-syndrome-hypothesis-pedal-error/
Presumably you are aware Stats 19 data alone doesn’t really allow a search for this type of data.
For sake of answering your question I am not aware of an issue in my area but I guess I am anticipating I will see some of these as EV ownership etc increases; the question is how significant it will become.I have occasionally seen this pattern of collision as Fatal Collisions over the years; they have involved drivers of advanced years, presumably who have changed to an automatic car because they are thought to be easier to drive. From memory most if not all occurred while the car was being parked; some have occurred in private car parks.
If this is an emerging problem it is going to be a challenge about the best way to deal with it.
