We improve the safety of the County’s roads by identifying and treating those sites and routes that have a recent significant personal injury crash history. As speed is a major factor in many crashes, the majority of work addresses speeding problems and can include traffic calming.
Many requests for safety improvements are made every year. As resources will never be able to address every road safety issue in the County, new schemes are identified using road safety intelligence to ensure as many casualties as possible are prevented with the funding available. As many potential schemes will have been identified, competition is high, and therefore consideration for each scheme will be based on the impact it will have on the community and the potential for reducing road casualties.
Safety engineering schemes can address:
• Inappropriate speed related personal injury crashes
• Road layout
• Junction safety
• Turning manoeuvres
• Visibility issues
• Vulnerable road users
Once a site or road has been identified it can be treated by a wide range of safety engineering measures which include:
• Signing, lining, coloured surfacing
• Crossing facilities
• Vehicle activated speed or warning flashing signs
• A reduction in speed limit
• Traffic calming such as road narrowing, chicanes and cushions
• Camera enforcement – but only as a last resort
Unfortunately, in many cases there won’t be a treatable pattern of crashes as driver behaviour may be a major contributory factor in many collisions. Therefore more educational or enforcement based activities may be of greater benefit.
