Surrey is central to visitors who pass through to their destinations along the busy commuter routes of M25, M23, M3 and A3.
It also offers easy access to central London, the south coast, Gatwick and Heathrow airports as well as the Channel Tunnel.
The Safer and Smarter Travel team bring together the experience of Road Safety professionals, School Travel Plan officers and Company and Residential Planning officers. One team who promote safe and sustainable travel choices in Surrey
Road safety education provided by the Safer Travel team:
‘Pedals’ a self help guide for teachers and parents
‘Primary pedestrian skills’ training booklets for years 1, 3 and 4
Bikeability cycle training for years 5 and 6
Customised cycle training
Theatre in Education for year 7 targeting anti social behaviour, speed passenger rights and distractions
Safe Drive Stay Alive high impact theatre production for year 12 in partnership with emergency services and NHS.
Management of 75 cycling instructors and 90 school crossing patrols
Partnership working with Engineers, Police, Highways Agency and Surrey Fire and Rescue.
Project work designing new resources and campaigns
School Travel plans ‘safer travel’ encourage 500 schools to have active travel plans
School, company and residential travel plans
The Smarter Travel team advises 200 businesses and monitors travel plans required of companies and housing developmentsas part of planning obligations. They promote sustainable travel and implement measures to encourage Surrey staff to review their travel habits so reducing congestion and pollution.
