The road safety partnerships in Yorkshire and Humber proactively work together to produce data led road safety campaigns. In 2012 the region won a Prince Michael road safety award for the Someone’s Son campaign which highlights the risk motorcyclist face on the regions roads (see link below).

The group has now used a similar approach to look at pedal cyclists. Whilst pedal cyclists are not the main casualty group for the region there is growing concern about the increase in pedal cyclist casualties in recent years.

This report was produced in 2012 using data from MAST and presents a wealth of information about the region’s casualty and collision data.

The report looks at both cyclists and drivers involved in cycle collisions and includes socio-demographic profiling of the different groups to help direct road safety campaigns.

A number of projects have developed as a result of the report, including:
• The Someone’s Son website has been extended to include information about cycling.
• Radio advertising across the region has been used to target drivers to give cyclists space and to explain the primary and secondary positions cyclists may take up on the road.
• The Urban Cycle Guide DVD has been produced which is aimed at adult urban commuters (see link below)
• With the Tour de France Grand Depart starting in Yorkshire in July 2014, the group is currently developing a mobile phone app which will offer advice to cyclists riding the route and in rural areas.
