Pre Driver Training

I am looking to update/revamp our pre driver training days and was wondering if anyone is running similar days for 16/17 year olds that have not yet started having lessons. I would really like to come along to have a look at how others are running these days. Thanks in advance

Greg,

There is some question regarding the road safety benefit of this type of activity.

I recommend you contact Frank McKenna, Psychologist, who has done research papers on this.

Frank's research (and others) indicates the type of activity you may be considering does too much to raise confidence levels in the youngster - which aren't matched by their abilities to assess and make decisions about risk.

Frank can explain the evidence to you.

My local driving instructor group (www.nadia-bristol.org.uk) run under 17 driving courses. They are supported by the local council road safety team. You would be more than welcome to come along to the seminars and practical sessions. We are based in Yate (near Bristol).

Here in Essex we have been running a monthly driving scheme for 16 year olds for many years now. It was set up originally by the Chelmsford branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. Check out the web-site on: http://www.youngdriverscheme.org/

Greg,

I strongly recommend that you take Julie Jones' advice. It's all too easy to do harm in the road safety arena, albeit unintentionally.

Hi Greg

Have a look at the award winning model that West Berks have used - DriveStart

DriveStart focuses on behaviour change element rather than driver 'training'

Perhaps you would like to view a session?

Louise

Pre Driver Training

Derbyshire County Council run a course for 15-17 year olds called 'First Gear'. The day, which runs from 9am to 3.30pm, is a mixture of classroom sessions (carried out by a Road Safety Officer) and driving sessions (carried out by ADI's).

The classroom session includes choosing the right driving instructor, the cost of learning to drive and maintaining a vehicle and the Highway Code. The driving element includes moving off safely and correctly, steering an accurate course, changing gears, braking safely and coming to a stop.

We run the courses at a number of different locations across the county, both in the school holidays and at weekends during term time. Currently we charge 39.00, this includes all refreshments, lunch and additional materials.

The courses have proved incredibly popular, all of 2018 courses being fully booked within the first couple of months of being advertised, we will start planning our 2019 courses soon.

You are more than welcome to come along to view our 'First Gear' course, we only have one course left this year, this is on Sunday 28th October in Matlock. If you have any questions I will be more than happy to help you.

Vanessa
