Migrant Drivers

Our charitable organisation is working with Syrian refugees in Ireland. Due to the rural nature of their new homes, it is necessary for our service users to be able to drive. However, gaining a licence is presenting difficulties for many of them. Has anyone experienced similar challenges? If so what solutions could be suggested. I'm particularly interested in developing some sort of workshop that could be delivered by trained interpreters and would appreciate feedback and suggestions.

Migrant Drivers

Hi Gary,

We recently developed an initiative to support new migrants to Tasmania in the road safety and licensing space.

The initiative was developed in partnership with the Tasmanian Migrant Resource Centre, the University of Tasmania and number of other stakeholders.

The resulting communication tools include a webpage (that seamlessly translates into the languages of migrants to Tasmania), printed collateral, workshops arranged through stakeholder groups and podcasts in a number of languages.

We've had really good feedback from users and stakeholders.

Here's the link to the page.

I have PDFs of the poster and flyer, it wont let me attach them but feel free to email me if you'd like me to send them through.

I have been working with Syrians in Gloucestershire trying to pass the UK driving test. I would recommend in the first instance that they use the app Theory Test Pro for their theory test. It covers all the questions in the DVSA test, using voice-over in English as in the official test, as well as translating into Arabic (which the English test does not have, but I believe is available in Belfast). The practical test is a challenge as they have to understand the instructions from the Satnav and also be prepared for the road sign directions: for this I have a list of the destinations which they have to learn to recognise and be able to get into the correct lane, etc. (Imagine us trying to follow directions in an Arabic or Chinese country and we have some understanding of what it is like for Arabic speakers in the UK.) It's not easy!

Thank you Beck and Gareth, sorry for the late response.
Both suggestions are very helpful indeed.
