Older Driver Intervention

I am currently developing an older driver interactive workshop style intervention and keen to communicate with drivers over 65/70 years of age or their siblings (encourage the driver to attend). We intend to promote our events through mediums they may use to encourage voluntary participation. The events will be hosted in Scotland but any suggested communication methods welcomed. Positive or negative case studies encouraged.

This is the report from a task force of experts. It should help understanding some of the practical issues. http://roadsafetyfoundation.org/project/making-older-drivers-safer-longer/

Dear Sandy, In Hampshire we have been running since 2013 with great success the Older Drivers Forum which is a partnership approach to helping and supporting older drivers to carry on driving safely for longer. This concept has now spread to many areas and happy to advice you and share ideas with you. Have a look at our web site www.olderdriversforum.com
We also run an awareness week every year and one of our partners in the Forum from the Council runs excellent workshops as well which I am sure they can share with you. Rob Heard

Sandy

Here in Devon we have been running "Driving Safer For Longer" in partnership with the Police since 2006.

The most successful medium for attracting Older Drivers to attend event is two fold.

Many Older Drivers belong to clubs, including WI, U3A, Probus etc who regularly have guest speakers and we fill those spaces for them, we regularly run 30-40 workshops every year.

The most successful medium for contacting Older Drivers has been through what I call the second tier newspaper/magazines. In the level between your main local newspapers and parish magazines.

Please feel free to contact me.

Nigel

Hi. I've started doing talks at our local libraries for older drivers. Many have a 'tea and talk' type session. Libraries are a good resource for reaching an older audience. In addition, U3A and Age UK can prove useful for getting information out or hosting talks as well. Best of luck!

Sussex Safer Roads Partnership uses a booklet which is a good engagement tool at events for both drivers and their concerned siblings. It always is interesting to give one to our more aged councillors to get their reaction. I've not been hit yet. Have worked with local Age Uk to promote and - at the time - with health providers concerned about degenerative cognitive diseases etc. For us - casualty data - it isn't a high priority so with cuts gone down list realistically - but do offer Experienced Driver Assessments via partners : http://www.sussexsaferroads.gov.uk/info/safer-for-drivers/older-drivers
