Vehicle Activated Signs

Is it possible to share any policies or set criteria you may have in place for replacing or installing new permanent vehicle/speed activated signs. As well as permanent signs I'm also interested in receiving information from authorities regarding the use of mobile signs.

VAS

Hi Clair
I am not involved with installing permanent signs but we have a set of mobile speed indicator devices that we have used quite successfully in the past. I'll be happy to share the site risk assessment and operating procedures if you drop me an e mail.

VAS signs

We set criteria for the use of permanent VAS as part of our adopted speed limit policy (page 16)

VAS Signs

We have a policy in place that requires that three criteria be met to erect a permanent VAS. I've enclosed a link to the report to Committee which agreed these criteria.

1. The 85%ile speed must be greater than the speed limit + 10% + 2 (e.g. 30mph limit would be 30+3+2+35mph similarly 46mph in a 40mph limit.
2. There must be a vehicle flow of around or more than 10,000 vehicles per day.
3. We fill out a weighted investigation sheet that takes account of the collision rate as well as any local pedestrian generators.

You can find the report at - http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/download/meetings/id/2337/vehicle_activated_signs_-_pilot_study_results_and_recommendations_motion_by_councillor_jackson

If the speed criteria is met but it fails on one or both of the others we will add it to a rolling program of mobile VAS that are changed around every week.

If you need any further info please drop me a line.

Cheers

Iain

Claire

We have a working practice on the provision of VAS that has recently been approved. Happy to let you have a copy if it would be helpful.

Vehicle Activated Signs

Our Parish Council has recently bought a SID but we are finding it takes a day after each battery change to settle down again. Is that normal?
