Older Drivers Week

As some of you are already aware SSRP has designated week commencing March 19th "Older Drivers Week". We will be organising a range of activities during the week aimed at this group (over 65-year-olds). We realise that most other road safety practitioners work with older motorists. Our hope is that others would use this week as well for their own initiatives, so we could start to grow a national week, similar to the one which runs in the USA. Please get back to me if you feel you would like to be involved.

Older Drivers

Hi Steve, Coincidentally I am delivering a talk to a Ladies Probus group on Monday 19th March - the start of Older Drivers Week. I have been wondering what to talk about and would appreciate any advice you can give me as the group will be populated by older women, many of whom will still be drivers.
The talk takes place in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and I want to advertise to the group that this is Older Drivers Week and talk about the responsibilities of older drivers without being patronising ....

I would appreciate it if you could let me know what else is happening in other areas, particularly what you will be doing in Sussex.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Susan McCormack

Older drivers week

Hello Steve
I think a specific week targeting older drivers (and pedestrians) is a great idea. During road safety week the focus does tend to be on children and schools.I have responsibility for road safety for older people in Birmingham and would be keen to hear from you about your plans for that week.

Older Driver

Hello Steve,
My only observation would be that if we set up another 'week' then that is something else that enables someone to say 'What are you doing for Older Drivers Week?'
My teams approach is that every week is road safety week because that is the job we do. We will deal with and facilitate interventions for older drivers for example as and when needed throughout the year and so it is with any part of the client base.
A rounded service throughout the year is in my opinion a better way forward than themed weeks.
Best wishes
Alan

Older Drivers materials

Hi all,

Please see http://www.highways.gov.uk/knowledge/24029.aspx for the "Careful! Considerate! Correct!" materials we (Highways Agency) produced with partners' help a few years ago. The content is still current.

Working with various Yorkshire colleagues we ran a day on the beach in Bridlington with opticians, pharmacists, RSOs advising on further training / eyesight checks / medical checks (medication mixes). It was easy and cheap to organise and went down very well with the locals.

Please help yourself from the website link and I have 350 copies of the DVD left if anyone wants a few to play at your events / training sessions.

Julie
