Online platform for pre-drivers

With the long wait for driving lessons, could this be an opportunity to provide young pre-drivers an online platform to get a ‘Head Start’ regarding their new driving experience – promoting safer behaviour behind the wheel – distraction, journey planning, pick your friends/passengers, Fatal 4, etc.

The workshop would be delivered by road safety professioanls, police - maybe in one or two sessions, advertised to students, parents, grandparents in local papers, social media, websites.

Just an idea at present but I am keen to know if anyone else is doing this? Don’t want to re-invent the wheel and all that.

Good idea. Would also be beneficial if there was a hazard awareness section, & particularly in respect to driving in vicinity of bike riders & pedestrians.

Gill there may be a relevant resource here - a site called Driving Test Success which appears to have lots of content geared to passing the test. It can be subscribed to for a small fee by the student as an individual, and it is also available to ADI's who can subscribe to enable THEIR OWN students to be provided with access free.I have no connection to this service but it sounded as though it might do some of what you have in mind. https://www.dtsanytime.co.uk/Login.aspx?goto=https://www.dtsanytime.co.uk/Learner/index.aspx

Second - I am currently endeavouring to LAUNCH a new Safer Driving FILM aimed at ALL DRIVERS (not learners as such). It runs for 70mins and considers 50 everyday driving scenarios that carry significant RISK and which can sometimes end badly. If you glance at my website here you will quickly get the idea - the is a SHORT PREVIEW of the film on the site (see menu) - here is the website www.stayingalivetodrive.co.uk - feel free to get in touch if you wish to know more. May be something like this? States seem to offer lots of them.

Good idea - maybe could amalgamate other materials being developed for virtual sessions usually done in college. Our TiE provider is developing passenger stuff for yr 11 and fire service looking at doing SDSA online. I've just collaborated with NHS Mindfulness group developing a short film for social media - in final edit - if you read this before weekend would be good if you could have look and comment. Trust all good in the East. All changed here.

We're planning a VR environment, initially for children, which could be adapted I think, if funding were available. We'd be happy to chat -and potentially share funding bids etc. You can get an idea at www.safewise.org/partner - although bear in mind this webpage is pitching to national partners to fund scenarios for KS1, 2 and 3, not young drivers... at the moment!

Hi Gill,
Re your help request for Young Drivers. I am not sure if you are aware but we run an online programme for Year 12 students which includes a visit to their school/college from the road safety team plus Police Casualty Reduction Officer. You can register and have a look by visiting www.cambsdriveiq.co.uk
Happy to discuss in more detail.
kind regards
Cheryl Morgan
